CleverReach is already ranked among the major do-it-yourself email marketing tools in the European market. Set up in Germany in 2007, the company claims that its newsletter software is now used by over 400,000 customers. And now it looks like it’s time to conquer the English-speaking market too…

The first thing worth mentioning is that CleverReach has some very interesting features, including A/B split testing, dynamic content blocks, RSS campaigns, transactional emails and order reports for online stores. They also offer a landing page builder (currently in beta).

With the Lite plan, you can send up to 1000 free emails to as many as 250 subscribers, although you do have to put up with some adverts. Then again, the free plan does also let you take advantage of email marketing automation and one-to-one support. Your other options are the Prepaid (pay as you go), Prepaid Monthly, basic, flat rate and high-volume plans.

We’ve taken a closer look at the tool to help you decide whether or not this provider could be the right choice for you.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros
  • Cons

Pros

  • Use your own domain name for links

You can use your own (sub-)domain name for tracking links without any extra cost, which can be an advantage in terms of both branding and deliverability.

  • Email automation

Offers reasonable automation options with a workflow view. What’s also great is that these features are included in every plan. Transactional emails, e.g. automatic order or dispatch confirmations, can also be sent.

Rating Details

Ease of Use

The user interface and editor are very straightforward and easy to use, so even beginners can find their way around the tool with ease. A step-by-step guide helps you with the most important set-ups when getting started.

Support is available directly within the tool via a dedicated button; however, it is limited to FAQs and the help center with the free plan. Premium support is reserved for customers who pay extra for this service.

Editor Info popup

CleverReach provides a solid and easy-to-use editor with all the essential features most users need. While it is not quite as flexible as competitors like Brevo, it remains intuitive and reliable.

Useful features such as undo/redo functionality, an integrated media library, and core content blocks—including a built-in countdown—round out a strong overall editing experience.

However, it lacks advanced content blocks (e.g. surveys), which can make it challenging to build more engaging emails.

Personalization Info popup

Offers robust personalization and dynamic content options. You can use merge tags for subscriber-specific data, segment audiences based on behavior or custom fields, and display conditional content blocks so different subscribers see tailored messages within the same email. This way you are able to fully customize the content of your newsletters.

Message Types

  • Marketing emails
  • Transactional emails
  • SMS
  • Web push
  • Mobile push
  • Live chat / conversations

Individual and regular campaigns, autoresponders, A/B split testing, RSS campaigns, follow-up campaigns or transactional emails – all of this is possible with CleverReach.

Choice and Flexibility of Template Designs Info popup

CleverReach offers a decent selection of 150+ responsive templates. While they look good, competitors like Kit or MailerLite offer more modern designs.

Unfortunately, there is no option to adapt templates globally, which would allow you to automatically apply your company’s branding across all templates. However, you can save your own templates and blocks, making them easy to reuse.

Email Marketing Automation Info popup

CleverReach offers a solid range of email automation features. You get 20 ready-made workflow recipes and a visual editor called THEA, where you can open and edit emails directly within automations.

Triggers based on opens and clicks are supported, as well as abandoned cart campaigns, tagging, and A/B testing (set up via manual split conditions). Lead scoring is possible through custom score fields, segmentation, and automation logic, though there’s no dedicated feature.

Native website tracking or CRM-based automations are not available.

List Management Info popup

CleverReach provides all the essential tools for managing your subscriber lists. You can tag subscribers and create segments based on behavior such as opens, clicks, and purchases.

Activity levels are visible in the statistics dashboard, which makes list cleaning possible, although it requires a bit more manual work than with some competitors (you’ll need to use tags or segments to filter inactive contacts). There is also a dedicated bounces tab to help manage deliverability.

Registration Forms/ Opt-in & Opt-out- Process Info popup

CleverReach lets you create signup forms such as inline forms and pop-ups, using a WYSIWYG editor that makes them easy to customize. You can add custom fields directly to the form, including options like multiple choice or dropdown menus, and enable reCAPTCHA for spam protection.

Forms can be embedded on your website in several ways. However, there is only one core form type available, and features like A/B testing or direct CSS editing in the editor are not supported—though you can export the form code and apply your own CSS styling externally.

AI Features

  • Email and subject line copy
  • Email design
  • Product recommendations
  • Send time optimization
  • Segments and workflows
  • Win probability

Compared to its competitors, CleverReach lags slightly behind in the range of AI features it offers. However, it does provide an AI content generator that helps create subject lines and newsletter content.

Monetization Channels

  • Paid newsletters
  • Ads / paid recommendations
  • Memberships
  • Sell digital products
  • Online courses

CleverReach doesn’t offer any monetization channels, making it less than ideal for creators looking to sell newsletter subscriptions or digital products.

Deliverability Features Info popup

CleverReach offers solid options for deliverability: DKIM enforcement, automatic bounce and complaint handling, dedicated IP warmup and a health score feature. Based on your deliverability results, CleverReach also offers tips for improving deliverability. While it lacks a deliverability dashboard, direct expert access, and built-in list cleaning, it maintains strict anti-purchased list policies.

Authentication Info popup

Supports SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Is a member of the Certified Senders Alliance (CSA).

Reports and Analysis

CleverReach’s reporting covers the essentials but has some limitations. It can filter out Apple MPP opens (though not bot clicks) and lets you customize your dashboard by adding or removing widgets, although it lacks a full custom reporting feature.

You can view click heat maps, and ecommerce-related sales can be tracked in email reports if your store is properly connected. Automation reports are available, but form reporting is very basic—showing only sends, opens, and sign-ups within the form menu.

Languages and Localization Info popup

CleverReach is available in German, English, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, and French (with the last two via automatic translation). Phone support is offered in German and English, and the help center is accessible in all supported languages.

However, the platform does not include a smart send feature or AI-powered translations.

Spam and Design Testing Info popup

CleverReach provides several tools to test and preview your emails. You can send test emails, preview the mobile version, and run a spam check. It’s also possible to see how your message appears across different email clients (via Litmus), though this feature is available at an additional cost (15€ for 3 tests).

There is no “preview as” option to view emails from a subscriber’s perspective. The tool also offers an accessibility test to ensure that every subscriber has easy access to your content. 5 tests cost around $17.

Own Tracking Domain in Email Links Info popup

Any custom (sub)domain can be used for tracking links. The sender email address can also be chosen freely. The platform allows you to authenticate your domain via DKIM and SPF, which helps improve deliverability and ensures your emails appear to come from your own branded domain rather than a generic CleverReach address.

Different levels of account access Info popup

Allows multiple users with customizable access levels at no extra cost. You can assign specific permissions so each user only sees or manages certain areas, such as recipient data, reports, or campaigns. This makes it easy to collaborate with team members or agencies while keeping control over who can view or edit different parts of your account.

Integrations

Integrates with a variety of ecommerce, CRM, and CMS platforms to streamline email marketing. Popular integrations include Shopify, WooCommerce, Shopware, Magento, as well as CRMs like SugarCRM and tools via Zapier. These connections allow syncing contacts, tracking purchases, managing abandoned carts, and automating workflows. APIs are another option available.

Landing Page Builder Info popup

CleverReach offers a landing page editor that is currently in beta. Creating a landing page is easy and intuitive; however, there is still a lack of flexibility at the moment. Buttons, for example, cannot be dragged exactly to the desired spot, but can only be positioned using the alignment option.

You can access their landing page builder via the form option.

Migration Support

Migration support is very limited. While there are integrations to import subscribers from CRMs like Zoho and SugarCRM, there seems to be no dedicated support to help you move over from another ESP. You could contract the priority support add-on service, but it’s unclear what exactly you’d get with this.

Customer Support

CleverReach offers a comprehensive knowledge base. While live chat isn’t available, premium support (paid) provides faster replies, typically within 24 hours, plus support via phone. Standard support also responds relatively quickly, usually within a day. The answers provided during our test via email were very detailed and helpful.

Overall rating

3.7

CleverReach is a reliable and easy-to-use email marketing platform for small-to-medium businesses, offering automation, responsive templates, behavior-based segmentation, and a very decent range of features. While there is no live chat assistance, the support team is quick to respond to questions.

However, there are limited form types, and no native website tracking. Some features require paid add-ons or manual setup.

Overall, it’s a solid, professional tool, though advanced users may need extra workarounds for certain tasks. While it’s not the cheapest provider on the market, it can be well worth it for frequent senders.

A More Detailed Look at CleverReach’s Features

Let’s now take a closer look at selected areas.

Newsletter Templates

To be honest, CleverReach probably won’t win any awards for its built-in templates. They look fine, but the selection is pretty limited, and most of the designs feel a bit dated. Customization options are also somewhat restricted, so if you’re hoping for full creative freedom, you might find it a little underwhelming.

That said, the template generator is a nice touch. It automatically builds a template based on your website’s design. While it wasn’t perfect in our test, it does a surprisingly good job of giving you a strong starting point — so you can easily create an on-brand newsletter with just a few tweaks.

Email Editor

The newsletter editor has definitely come a long way over the years. It now offers plenty of layout blocks, making it simple to structure your emails exactly how you want. Adding call-to-action buttons is also quick and easy, and you can style them to match your brand.

CleverReach recently added an AI content generator powered by OpenAI to help you brainstorm subject lines and content ideas faster. It’s a handy feature — though to be fair, the text quality doesn’t quite reach ChatGPT’s level yet.

And finally, there’s now a video block, which is a great addition. Just paste in a YouTube link, and the editor automatically creates a clickable preview image with a play button. It’s an easy way to make your emails look more dynamic and engaging without much effort.

Conclusion

The wide range of features on offer makes CleverReach a decent choice for users sending both small and larger volumes of emails. On the whole, working with this newsletter tool is nice and straightforward.

There are a few things that clearly need improvement, like the forms that are not responsive and the fact that the editor can sometimes behave a bit clunky (although nothing too terrible). But probably the main criticism is CleverReach’s high prices compared to similar newsletter software providers.

On the other hand, the THEA email automation module is rather exciting, as it can be used to set up automated campaigns in a workflow view.
