As far as cheap email marketing services go, very few match the competitive prices offered by EmailOctopus.

This UK-based email marketing platform set out with a mission to “provide email marketing that's simpler, more intuitive, and better value”. And unlike other animal-themed email marketing platforms that started off this way, it’s been able to maintain its low prices and keep to that promise.

But does the smaller price tag mean compromising on quality? We’ve been tracking EmailOctopus for a few years now, and have a pretty good sense of how it compares to other tools in the market. While we can vouch for their ease of use and convenience for bloggers, nonprofits, and affiliate marketers, there are a few niches where the stripped-back feature set will probably feel a little too limiting.

So, can EmailOctopus take your business or project to where you’d like it to be? Let’s find out in this EmailOctopus review.

Note: This review will focus on EmailOctopus, the email marketing platform, rather than EmailOctopus Connect (which is designed for more technical users familiar with Amazon SES).

EmailOctopus Summary

EmailOctopus is one of the most affordable and beginner-friendly email marketing tools out there, offering plans that start from just $9 a month. It offers over 100 clean templates (plus four custom-branded ones created for you), a simple drag-and-drop editor, and a generous free plan. Nonprofits also benefit from a 20% lifetime discount.

That said, the simplicity comes with trade-offs. EmailOctopus lacks advanced automation, deep segmentation, and ecommerce features, so it’s better suited to creators, freelancers, and small businesses who just need a straightforward way to send good-looking newsletters. If you’re after complex funnels or advanced integrations, you may find it too restrictive.

EmailOctopus’s pricing is not only cheap – it’s also very simple to get your head around. There are just two plans available: the free Starter plan, and the paid Pro plan.

The (free) Starter plan supports up to 2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails per month, with access to most of the same tools available on paid plans (albeit with EmailOctopus branding and limited features). Reports and live chat support are also limited to 30 days.

On the Pro plan, pricing starts at around $9 per month for up to 500 subscribers and 10,000 emails, and scales incrementally based on list size — the cost adjusts automatically if your subscriber count grows, and you can enable downgrades when your list shrinks. Features like unlimited users, landing pages, forms, more automations, and priority support come included in the Pro tier.

Note that EmailOctopus only offers month-to-month subscriptions. There are no discounts for annual contracts.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros
  • Cons

Pros

  • Very affordable

EmailOctopus has built its reputation on value, and it shows. With plans starting at just $9 a month, it’s one of the cheapest ways to send professional-looking email campaigns. Unlike other providers, pricing is transparent and free of hidden extras, which helps to make budgeting straightforward.

  • Beginner-friendly

The pared-down feature set is a big advantage for beginners. There are no complicated menus or steep learning curves, which makes EmailOctopus particularly appealing if you’re flying solo.

  • Good template offering

EmailOctopus gives you a strong starting point with more than 100 modern, mobile-responsive templates. On top of that, you also get four custom-branded templates created for you, which saves time and ensures design consistency. The ability to upload your own HTML templates is also a nice touch for more design-savvy users.

  • Unlimited users on paid plan

Unlike competitors such as Brevo or Beehiiv, which charge for extra users, EmailOctopus allows you to add unlimited users on the paid plan. It’s a budget-friendly option for teams that want to collaborate on email campaigns without worrying about pushing up costs.

Is EmailOctopus the right newsletter service for you?

  • Bloggers and content creators

EmailOctopus is a great fit for bloggers who want to build a loyal audience without spending a fortune. Its affordable plans, easy-to-use editor, and built-in forms and landing pages make it simple to share updates, promote new posts, or send personal newsletters. You don’t need technical expertise to get started, and the branded templates help keep your emails consistent and professional-looking.

  • Nonprofits and small community groups

With a 20% lifetime discount for nonprofits and a generous free plan, EmailOctopus is particularly attractive for charities, clubs, and community projects. It offers straightforward tools to stay in touch with members or donors, without the overhead of complex automation or pricey subscriptions.

  • Affiliate marketers and “gray-area” senders

Unlike some providers that are stricter about acceptable use, EmailOctopus is more relaxed about industries like affiliate marketing and cryptocurrency. This makes it appealing for users who have had trouble being accepted by other platforms. While the tool doesn’t offer advanced monetization features, it integrates with third-party platforms (like Payhip), making it flexible enough for simple promotional campaigns.

Rating Details

Ease of Use

No complaints here – EmailOctopus is one of the most beginner-friendly tools we’ve tested. Because of their pared-down feature set, navigating the tool is very straightforward.

A 5-step “Getting started” checklist, video tutorials, and an ever-present Help button also help to make it a breeze to use.

Editor Info popup

Unfortunately, the ease of use has its drawbacks, especially when it comes to the flexibility of the editor. There are only 9 content blocks you can use, and they’re all fairly basic (text, images, etc).

There are also a few issues with the editor’s behavior – for example, making changes to the background color sometimes results in the appearance of new elements that aren’t easily removable. It also lacks undo and redo buttons.

Personalization Info popup

With the help of EmailOctopus’s merge tag cheatsheet you can personalize with first name, email address and even custom data. You can also include conditional content based on contact data, but it requires a bit of (basic) coding.

Message Types

  • Marketing emails
  • Transactional emails
  • SMS
  • Web push
  • Mobile push
  • Live chat / conversations

With a narrow focus on email marketing, EmailOctopus only allows you to send marketing emails (campaigns + automated).

Transactional emails via SMTP are only possible if you connect via EmailOctopus Connect (EmailOctopus’s Amazon SES-based product).

Unlike with other tools, A/B testing isn’t possible.

Choice and Flexibility of Template Designs Info popup

Upon signup you’re asked to upload logo, brand colours, font and socials, which EmailOctopus uses to design a unique set of emails, landing pages, forms. But you also get access to a range of 100+ modern-looking email templates, and can also upload your own HTML designs.

A nice touch is that your logo is automatically applied to all emails – which is a seriously underrated timesaver!

Email Marketing Automation Info popup

Best alternative: Moosend

As a tool focused on helping users send simple marketing campaigns, automation isn’t one of EmailOctopus’s strong suits. While you can automate email sends, tags, and data updates via its workflow editor, it lacks standard automation features such as pre-defined workflows, and the ability to trigger an automation based on email opens and clicks.

More advanced features such as web tracking and abandoned cart campaigns also aren’t possible. Similarly-priced alternative Moosend is much stronger in this area.

List Management Info popup

The segmentation features are pretty intuitive to use, letting you create segments based on criteria like campaign activity (like email opens and clicks), or active vs inactive contacts.

However, there are no plugins to help you import contacts from other tools (e.g. another ESP or your website builder).

While they don’t charge for unsubscribed or bounced contacts, contacts that exist in multiple lists will be counted (and charged) multiple times. A good way to get around this is to make sure you only have one list, and to use segments or tags to organize your contacts.

Registration Forms/ Opt-in & Opt-out- Process Info popup

EmailOctopus provides a handful of form templates for inline, popup, slide-in, and “hello bar” forms. You can tweak them with a visual editor, although options to customize layouts are a little limited (e.g. you can’t edit CSS), and you can only embed forms using Javascript.

What’s great is that you can enable invisible reCAPTCHA functionality to filter out bot signups.

Note: on the free plan, the EmailOctopus logo will be displayed.

AI Features

  • Email and subject line copy
  • Email design
  • Product recommendations
  • Send time optimization
  • Segments and workflows
  • Win probability

EmailOctopus doesn’t provide any AI-powered tools at the moment.

Monetization Channels

  • Paid newsletters
  • Ads / paid recommendations
  • Memberships
  • Sell digital products
  • Online courses

Rather than providing built-in monetization tools, EmailOctopus relies on integrations with tools like Payhip to support digital product sales.

Deliverability Features Info popup

Helps to optimize deliverability by enforcing authentication, suppressing bounced and complaints (which can also be viewed), facilitating the removal of inactive contacts, and enforcing strict policies around using purchased lists. EmailOctopus also manually reviews emails and automations before you can send them.

However, it lacks any kind of deliverability dashboard or scoring, and doesn’t offer any dedicated deliverability consultation beyond its standard customer support. While it provides guidance around warming up IPs, dedicated IPs are only available to EmailOctopus Connect users.

Authentication Info popup

Sets up DKIM, SPF, DMARC for your domain, and provides instructions on how to add records for various DNS providers.

Reports and Analysis

The reports are pretty basic. You can see opens, clicks, unsubscribes, and complaints, as well as automation reports. But we found that these didn’t get updated in real time, meaning we often had to check back in again later.

It’s also missing click heatmaps, custom reports, and revenue-related reports.

Languages and Localization Info popup

Best alternative: MailerLite

The platform and support are only available in English, and it doesn’t support any automated or AI-powered translations. If these features are important to you, we’d recommend a tool like MailerLite.

Spam and Design Testing Info popup

Offers basic tools such as the ability to test send emails, preview mobile versions of emails, and see how a personalized email would look. However, it’s missing email client previews (e.g. in Apple Mail or Outlook), and a spam checker.

Own Domain Info popup

Tracking domains in emails can only be changed if you’re an EmailOctopus Connect customer. However, you can change landing page domains.

Different levels of account access Info popup

Only available for paid users, with access levels including Admin, Manager, Analyst and Accountant. One big plus is there’s no limit on the number of users you can add.

Integrations

Just a handful of direct integrations are available. Most of the others are via Zapier (e.g. for Shopify or Woocommerce). What’s more, the WooCommerce zap only allows you to update data – it doesn’t trigger automations or abandoned cart emails.

Landing Page Builder Info popup

A landing page builder is available with 5 ready-to-go templates, although the designs are more similar to a full-page form and the layouts aren’t super customizable (e.g. you can’t add videos, or place elements exactly where you’d like). However, you can drag and drop in basic content blocks like title, text, images and social buttons.

Migration Support

EmailOctopus is a self-service platform, meaning it doesn’t provide any direct support when it comes to moving over your data from another platform. That said, the team does provide decent customer support for any general enquiries (see next row).

Customer Support

We were pretty happy with the support provided. The help center is comprehensive, and the live chat support was very responsive – they often went above and beyond to provide detailed answers, suggestions, and even share relevant documentation from external sources.

Note that chat support is only available to free (Starter) users for the first 30 days. While EmailOctopus don’t offer 24/7 support, they do promise to respond to all support queries within 24 hours.

Overall rating

3.8

EmailOctopus stands out as one of the most affordable and beginner-friendly email marketing tools on the market. If you want to send good-looking newsletters without dealing with complex features, it’s a straightforward, no-fuss solution.

That said, the stripped-back feature set will likely feel restrictive if you’re looking to run complex funnels, ecommerce automations, or data-heavy campaigns.

Conclusion

EmailOctopus delivers on its promise of being simple, affordable, and refreshingly easy to use. It’s not trying to compete with heavyweight platforms on automation or ecommerce features. Instead, its strengths are in helping cost-conscious users send attractive newsletters without the complexity or steep price tags of other tools.

Sure, it has its limitations. The editor is basic, reporting is minimal, and integrations are thin compared to larger competitors. If you’re looking to build sophisticated campaigns, you’ll quickly bump into its ceilings.

But for bloggers, nonprofits, freelancers, and small teams who just want to share their stories, keep supporters engaged, or promote content on a tight budget, EmailOctopus is a breath of fresh air. It strips away the clutter and makes email marketing approachable, without cutting corners on the essentials. If that sounds like what you’re after, EmailOctopus could be exactly the kind of no-fuss tool you’ve been looking for.

FAQ

Yes — the free Starter plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails per month. However, emails will display the EmailOctopus logo, and support is only available for the first 30 days.

Definitely. The interface is very simple, there’s a guided setup checklist, and the feature set makes it easy to focus on the essentials without being overwhelmed.

EmailOctopus comes in two versions: the standard EmailOctopus, which is a straightforward, hosted platform where everything is managed for you, and EmailOctopus Connect, which requires you to link your own Amazon SES account. The main EmailOctopus service is easier to use and best for most users, while Connect is aimed at more technical senders who are comfortable with AWS and want to take advantage of even lower sending costs at higher volumes.
